Candidate Spotlight

One of the most rewarding aspects of what we do at IRES is hearing from our candidates about all of the positive and awarding experiences they have had in the USA on the J1 Internship/Traineeship.  Today we would like to share with you the most wonderful email that I received this morning...I will have a SMILE on my face all day!

Before I share his message, I would first like to tell you a little about Rohinraj Rajamanickham.  Rohin is a graduate from Mumbai University in India where he received a Bachelor Degree in Hotel Management & Catering Technology in 2005.  Rohin completed is first J1 program back in 2008/2009 at a hotel in Kansas for Front Office training.   After returning back home to India, Rohin held several positions in hotels as Front Desk Duty Manager before deciding that he wanted to come back to the USA and gain additional experience.

In 2013, Rohin contacted IRES for the first time to assist him with applying for his second program.  IRES found a placement for him in New Jersey as a Front Office Trainee.  Here Rohin was able to expand his Front Office skills and knowledge and upon completion of his program and returning home, he was able to secure a position as Front Office/Housekeeping Manager.  He held this position for several years before deciding that he would apply for his 3rd J1 program to be able to learn even more about the hospitality industry and American cultural.

Rohin came to the USA in 2018 for his 3rd J1 program.  His placement was at a resort in Georgia where he received Supervisory/Management training in the Rooms Division.   Check out some pictures of his most recent program.

Here is the message that I received this morning from Rohin.

While we know that Rohin is sad that his program is coming to an end, we also know how happy he is to be returning back home to his family.  Rohin, you are a class-act and you will be missed.  We wish you all the best in your career and we know that you will achieve your goals and be very successful.  Thank you for allowing us to be part of your IRES Journey!

Sincerely,

Did you know that research shows that gaining International experience is a HUGE benefit for your future career.  Training abroad not only broadens your knowledge and allows you to discover something new but it allows your resume to stand out in the competitive job market.

Here are the TOP 3 benefits of gaining International experience:

  • Language Skills - Speaking a second language fluently is a skill that employers greatly value, especially if they operate at an international level.  It also show an employer that you like to take initiative and are willing to accept a new challenge.

  • Employable Skills - After gaining International experience you will have the soft skills that stand out to employers such as Confidence, Sense of adventure, Open-mindedness, Adaptability, Communication Skills, Teamwork and Ambition.  These are KEY qualifications and characteristics that employers look for when scanning resumes.

  • Career Prospects/Grow Your Network - Having an International experience will make you more confident and social.  Almost all employers want confident people on their team that have good communication skills and can make new connections easily.  Your international experience will also be beneficial in the future as you may be the first to hear about your "Dream" job from the network you created while abroad.

Cultural Exchange

While the training that you came to receive is important, another big part of the J1 Internship/Traineeship Program is the Cultural Exchange aspect.  The USA is a highly diverse country which makes the USA a unique country.  America is a GREAT nation because of it's rich history and the heritage of our citizens.  Americans as a whole, have common customs like celebrating the National Holidays, but depending on the location in the USA, may have a very different culture than another area in the USA.

What is Culture?  Culture is defined as the customs, arts, social institutions and achievements of a particular nation, people or other social group.

Make the most of your J1 program and get involved.  Here are some tips for getting the most out of this amazing opportunity:

  • Ask your supervisors or managers about things to go see and get involved in the community
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help or advice
  • Keep a diary or journal of your memories
  • Reach out to other Interns/Trainees to attend local events together...it's always more fun in a group!

Cultural Events to participate in:

  • Celebrate US holidays
  • Participate in community events
  • Watch a sport you have never played
  • Try eating and cooking local foods
  • Listen to a local radio station
  • Attend concerts, movies, theater or other activities in your area

Don't forget to send IRES your photos of your adventures.  We love seeing them and sharing them on our Facebook page.

Thank you for reading and if you have any suggestions for other Interns/Trainees for cultural activities, please comment below.
