You if have already visited the USA or spent time around
Americans you may know these common traits, but it is always helpful to be reminded of some of the most common
America traits.
1. Time
& Promptness – Time is very important in American culture and it is essential
that you be on time for you shifts, meetings, appointments and social
engagements. If you are going to be late
or miss the appointment, then it is extremely important that you call and explain.
In most circumstances, the time you are
asked to be someplace is the time that you are expected to be there.
2. Confrontation
– Discussing issues or ideas openly is encouraged. Americans, especially in business situations,
do not spend time with polite small chat, they often go right into the point of
discussion. This is not that they are
being rude, time is precious, and, in many cases, they just do not want to
waste time on unimportant chit-chat.
3. Conversation
– For many Americans silence is uncomfortable and would prefer talking
about the weather, sports, parties, food or just about anything. Americans tend to stand about 18 inches apart
while talking, standing too close may make them feel uncomfortable.
4. Cultural
Diversity – The USA is a diverse society that is rich in a multitude of
cultures. You will have the opportunity
to meet people from all ethnic backgrounds, each with unique traditions,
behaviors and customs. We encourage you
to share your culture and background with your fellow Interns/Trainees and your
host company.
We hope these common traits are helpful to you!
